Speaking of faster cars, I was thinking of saving up to buy myself a 996 Carrera sometime in the next two or three years. The Malibu would be relegated to a pure beater commuter and the 911 would be the weekend/occasional DD ride.

I APPROVE THIS THOUGHT!
If you do it feel free to hit me up for info and ideas.
I have a 997 and have researched 996s and 997s a fair bit.
A Carrera with a 6MT is just a beautiful thing that every Opponaut should have!

Awesome! Yeah I'd much prefer the six speed as a drove a 996 Cabriolet once with tiptronic and it was fun, but it could have been better.
I test drove a 997.2 Carrera S with the PDK a couple of years back and I found that to be a blast! I wonder how much 997 prices will drop in the upcoming years.

Oh lord I test drove the 997.2 C2S PDK as well before getting my car. It was SO fast. But it was $25K more. I saved the money and later put it towards another car.
997 prices have dropped a bit recently. I kind of feel like they might stop dropping sooner than later. The 991 is just so damn expensive. And a lot of people like the old school steering and smaller body of the 997.
If you can find a good deal on a 996 Turbo 6MT take it. The 996 Turbo and GT3 had a different engine block than the other models and it was super strong.
If you get a 996 C2 or C2S look for one that had the IMS issue fixed or the engine work done to prevent it from happening.
What is your budget? The prices for 997.1 C2 coupes are starting to get really attractive.

My budget, based on what I believe I'll be able to round up in a couple of years is between $20k-$30k with 30 being the upper limit.
I know a couple of people who work in shops that specialize in. Mercedes-Benz and Porsche with which my uncle has worked. I forgot to mention that my uncle has owned several 911's, the last being the 996 cabriolet I mentioned earlier. He had a 911SC and a 930 Turbo back in the 80's and briefly owned a 964 Carrera while I was in elementary school. Needless to say, he has plenty of mechanical experience when it comes to dealing with Porsches so he could teach me how to work stuff on my own.
The only alternative to the 911 would be a C5 Corvette or a C6 depending on how the pricing goes for those.

That is awesome that your uncle has so much Porsche knowledge!!
If he can help you find a good 996 C2 whose IMS issue has been fixed or prevented then the car will be a hell of a deal.
A good question to ask him - is it safer to buy a lower mileage 996 or a higher mileage 997.1?
I bet you will be able to get a higher mileage 997.1 for about $30K sooner than later.
My Dad still has his 911SC. It was his first Porsche and the first sports car I ever got to drive. So I'm definitely a sucker for the 911. All generations feel connected to me.
I do like the Cayman too. You can probably get a nice used Cayman S for $30K.
I like the Corvette too. I just feel faster in cars like the 997 or Cayman because I'm more comfortable pushing them hard. The Corvette isn't very big but it feels bigger than it is. The Porsches feel their size. It doesn't take long for the car to fit like a glove. Once that happens you can really push them through the twisties...

IMS issue was a bearing if I'm not mistaken? I'll have to see what he knows about 997's as I don't think he has much experience working on those, at least not as much as 996 and before.
The Cayman is also on my list. I just really want a 911 of some sort but I'd be perfectly fine in a Cayman as well.
That's what I like about the Porsche, they've got the steering feel and response down just right. Everything just works together well for an enhanced driving experience!
The reason I lean more towards the Porsche over the Corvette is because there are a bunch of twisty mountain roads over here in Puerto Rico. I know the later generations of Corvette actually handle pretty well but I'd be wary about pushing a car with a bruiser of an engine like that on a mountain pass.

I haven't looked into the IMS issue in detail. I should do that one day. From what I know the 997 didn't have that issue.
That is awesome that you have so many twisty roads!! A 911 is probably the perfect car for you then. Driving twisty roads is more about feel than speed as you can't push it too hard as you'll get pulled over. What's important is how fun it is to push it a little but not enough to go to jail ;)
I read something very interesting about the Corvette the other day. I haven't had a chance to drive any Vette, but I've been a passenger in a C6 ZR1 and talked to someone on Oppo who has a C6 Z06 and a classic 911 (and a BMW E46 M3). And I've done a lot reading on the Vette too.
From what I've read and heard the C5 and C6 feel bigger than they are. They are very fast and handle very well. But you have to know how to drive them well. And they feel more at home on track than in the canyons. But the interesting thing I read about the C7 is that it feels just as good in the canyons as it does on track. So it might "feel" more like a smaller car.

Well if only I could afford a C7 lol.
Yeah, I've found a couple of pretty deserted mountain roads which are a hoon's paradise. Stumbled across them by accident once when I took a wrong turn on a Krispy Kreme donut run, only I was driving my Malibu at the time which isn't the nimblest thing out there.

I think it has to do with how low you sit in such a wide car that makes the Corvette feel so big. The 997 I drove certainly felt as small as it was and would be much more wieldy for the kind of roads I frequent.
I'm still trying to gather info on the whole IMS deal. I think Porsche issued a settlement as a result of a class action lawsuit but there could still be affected cars out there. Apparently this also affected Boxsters of the same time period.

Haha you'll be able to one day. But not worth buying a C7 now even if you could afford it. The markup is WAY too high. Paying over MSRP sucks!
I'm so jealous about your roads!!
Manuél Ferrari

I think your guess is correct. I bet it's the width of the Vette that makes it seem huge. Cause it's definitely not a very long car at all. And you're right the 997 C2 and C2S are pretty narrow cars. The C4, C4S and Turbo have the widebody. But the standard cars are not wide at all and have short wheelbases too. So they are super easy to drive.
I heard about the IMS class action lawsuit. There might be people who got the money but didn't get their cars repaired. It would be a bummer to buy a car and then have the engine blow!
